As recommended in BS 6262-4, the risk of injury from falling fragments of glazing should be reduced by using glazing that:

• is likely to remain in position even if fractured, for example laminated glass, adhesive-backed polymeric filmed glass
• is very unlikely to fracture under any circumstances, for example, plastics glazing sheet materials, or
• shatters into relatively harmless fragments after fracture, e.g. toughened glass, and limiting the height or quantity of falling material or both

The risk of fracture of toughened glass due to nickel sulphide inclusions may be reduced by specifying heat‑soaked toughened glass to BS EN 14179.
