Can annealed glass be used in shop fronts?

Laminated safety glass is commonly used in shop fronts. However, Approved Document K (England) permits thick annealed glass to be used in such applications. Panes forming parts of fronts (but not other locations) to shops, showrooms, offices, factories and public buildings, supported on all edges, may be of equivalent robustness not complying with BS EN 12600, as follows:
  • 8 mm must not exceed 1100 x 1100 mm
  • 10 mm must not exceed 2250 x 2250 mm
  • 12 mm must not exceed 4500 x 4500 mm
  • 15 mm (and thicker) – no limit
