We can improve the sound insulation of glass in different ways - increasing the thickness of the pane, using laminated glass on its own or within an Insulating Glass Unit (IGU) - the larger the gap between the panes, the better the insulation.

For optimum noise reduction, Pilkington Optiphon™ is a laminated product, which has a special acoustic PVB interlayer. Available in a number of different thickness from 6.8 mm to 16.8 mm, this product can be combined with other products in double glazed units to achieve excellent sound reduction.

As Pilkington Optiphon™ is a laminated product, this will be marked with BS EN 14449. Coated products manufactured by Pilkington UK such as Pilkington K Glass™ and Pilkington Activ™ are not required to be marked, however, the Insulating Glass Units should arrive with labels indicating the type of glass the unit contains.
