Glass with 50% less carbon launches in new milestone for decarbonising buildings. 10 October 2023. St Helens Borough Council has secured government funding of £138,000 to produce a plan for a district heat network, which would harness waste heat produced by manufacturing processes at Pilkington UK’s Greengate site, or a planned Energy Recovery Facility currently in development by the ESB group.

The carbon capture trial announced today is now successfully underway in St Helens, UK, at Pilkington UK’s glass manufacturing site, part of NSG Group. It is the first demonstration of a carbon-capture technology on an industrial flat glass furnace in Europe.

The NSG Group will reduce its carbon emissions by 30% compared with 2018 levels, by 2030. It forms part of a wider plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, from emissions directly associated with its manufacturing to carbon produced in its supply chain.
