Bristol 405PS - A Bespoke Request..

Chris came to Classics looking for a Windscreen for his Bristol 405, his car is a prototype built in 1954 and different in shape to the existing production Bristol 405 tooling we had in range.

Over a few months Chris worked with us to feedback measurements on the changes he would like to make to the shape using a standard 405 screen we had sent out to him, typically this measurement and assessment is done on site by the Classics team, but due to the Lock down situation in the UK at the time we had to do this remotely using Teams meetings and over the phone and a lot of email.

To begin with we had to start with a measurement from the glass to the car body (the gap), this gap measurement correlates to the adjustments needed on the bending mould,

That information is sent to our Development team in the factory in Finland, the mould was altered according to the adjustments sent by Chris and the Classics team and a new screen made.

During the new screen manufacture Chris opted to 'upgrade' his car by adding a DAB Ariel into the glass and a demisting (Heated) functionality, so now Chris can receive crystal clear digital radio in the car and his screen will stay clear in the colder weather.

The design for both heating and antenna was tailored specifically to Chris's requirements inside the car, where the wires exit, how long the antenna wire needed to be, the connectors used, power for the heating and so on.

The adjustments made in the factory are done by hand by our expert bending team - Specialist bending technician Mikko Alkila and Project leader Akseli Venho were able to adjust the furnace heating pattern to increase the bending in certain areas and reduce it in others, using Chris's measurement guide, they rechecked the glass after each bending run until we had a match, after 2-3 attempts Mikko was able to produce the finished screen to a perfect match and importantly repeatable at any time in future if required.

The final Windscreen made to the specific measurement changes is now fitted perfectly into the car,

With  the restoration finished, Chris kindly provided us some pictures of the Car.

" Thanks to you Nick, Akseli and all the team for your patience during the up's and downs of achieving the final excellent result.

From now on Pilikington is my go to company for standard and bespoke glass products.

Thanks again,

Regards "
