Canopy

Glass Canopy

A glass canopy provides an attractive and practical feature to a building, usually outside entrance doors. The canopy will protect people entering the building, & help to keep rain or any bad weather from also entering. A glass canopy will allow more natural light through into the entrance area compared to a solid canopy.

Entrance canopies are overhead by definition, therefore when specifying a glass canopy it is essential that a durable impact resistant product is specified.

The common forms are framed single glass using either Pilkington Optilam™ or Pilkington Optifloat™ THS (toughened heat soaked glass). Another fixing method is frameless bolted toughened glass either supported from below or above with relatively lightweight struts or wires.  Where bolt fixing is used, only toughened glass is used as laminates are prone to cracking around the stress points created by the holes for the fittings.

Canopies that project from buildings are subject to wind and snow loads and it is therefore important to determine the correct strength of glass to be used. Our technical advisory service can provide calculated glass thicknesses for framed rectangles or corner bolted toughened glass constructions if provided with the snow load and design wind load for the location.
