Last week, we were delighted to host the third NSG Group - University of Liverpool Symposium at our European Technical Centre in the UK.

NSG Group - University of Liverpool Symposium

The symposium offers an opportunity to bring together members of both institutions to showcase current and completed collaborative research projects between NSG Group and the Departments of Engineering and Chemistry, especially the Materials Innovation Factory, University of Liverpool.

From antimicrobial coatings and intellectual property (IP), to the use of AI and machine learning in new product and process development, the event included presentations from a number of University PhD students and academics, as well as NSG Group R&D and IP team members. The event also gave attendees an opportunity to explore the R&D laboratories on site in Lathom.

Su Varma, NSG Group’s Academic Director (R&D) said: “Almost two years since we signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalise our partnership with the University of Liverpool, we were delighted to host the third symposium and hear about the excellent progress made in many areas which support us to be at the forefront of innovation in novel materials for advanced glazing. Our relationships with world leading academic research partners offer significant opportunities for groundbreaking advancements and discoveries, and this event was an excellent showcase of developments made through outstanding collaboration between the two institutions.”

Kevin Sanderson, Chief Technology Officer at NSG Group, added: “This symposium is a great example of how far our collaboration journey has come since 2017.  The breadth of research topics under evaluation has expanded significantly over the years and now covers material discovery, AI as well as decarbonisation activities.  The event also promotes discussion and provides NSG Group scientists the opportunity to raise new topics for future collaborations. This, and previous events, have already led to a number of new projects being established, and critically, we’re starting to see some of this work being transferred to internal programmes and add value to NSG Group.”

Prof. Matt Rosseinsky, Department of Chemistry and Materials Innovation Factory at the University of Liverpool, shared: “The symposium demonstrated the focussed collaboration between NSG Group and the University of Liverpool to tackle urgent global challenges, working across science and engineering disciplines at the interface between materials chemistry and artificial intelligence. It was exciting to see the strong engagement of academic and industrial researchers in discussions that aimed to both exploit the advances made in projects already underway and to identify new research opportunities. The new facilities that we were shown at NSG Group promise to further accelerate progress towards our joint goals.”
