The European Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/2055 Regulation restricts the use of synthetic polymer microparticles, commonly referred to as microplastics. Its purpose is to prevent the release of microplastics into the environment.

Within the flat glass value chain, interleavant polymer powders used for the storage, handling and transportation of flat glass sheets fall within the scope of this Regulation. However, the placing on the market of these materials remains permitted by the European Commission Regulation when they are intended for use at industrial sites.

The instructions for use and disposal of the interleavant polymer powders can be found in the safety data sheets of our suppliers which you find in this section. These safety data sheets contain guidance as to how the materials should be used, handled, stored, and disposed of to minimize or prevent microplastic emissions in industrial environments.

From May 2027 there will be a legal requirement to report microplastic emissions to the environment, this includes declaring either ‘zero emissions’ or where applicable, the quantity of microplastic emissions released (for example, from washing off the interleavant polymer powder into wastewater) if not fully eliminated.
