Balustrades
Glass barriers are used in buildings for a number of purposes and allow the maximum flow of light and view both inside and outside the structure. The four main areas that glass is used are:
- in external windows to prevent people falling out of a building,
- on balconies and terraces either inside or out,
- around stairs and lifts,
- in guiding walkways to control the direction of pedestrian traffic.
A British Standard BS6180:1999 is the code of practice for barriers in and about buildings. The standard gives design information and details on three typical designs that are commonly used. Guidance is given on the heights and choice of materials and fixings.
