Located on the Dutch North Sea coast, the new Inntel Hotel Den Haag Marina Beach in Scheveningen, is a seaside landmark like no other – and in no small measure, its outstanding visual qualities are thanks to a clever combination of glass products.
The Inntel Hotel is part of the city plan designed by KCAP for the Noordelijk Havenhoofd in Scheveningen. The innovative hotel façade contains special contours and lines that make it look like a sailing boat in the wind.
Comprising 226 luxurious rooms on 12 floors, some with their own whirlpool and floor-to-ceiling windows, a Spa & Wellness center and meeting rooms, the triangular-shaped structure looks different from each vantage point, paying homage to the beach and the sea. From afar, the glass façade with the diagonal stripes creates the dynamics of a sail, but at a closer look, it also represents the ripples in the water or those of a sandy beach after the water retreats.
“The choice of glass played a very important role in this project,” said Erik Brookhuis, Project Department Manager at Pilkington Nederland.
“More than 4,800 m2 of clear float glass was processed by Pilkington Austria GmbH into 900 individual panes with different dot grids using a digital printing process. A total of 166 different dot patterns with varying degrees of opacity produce the differences in the viewing angles.
“Insulating glass units manufactured by Pilkington Nederland B.V. in Enschede, ensure safety and a comfortable indoor hotel climate.
“As a result of the digital printing, the average g-value, the amount of heat from the Sun that can be transmitted through the glass, has been reduced by eight percent to 38 percent,” said Erik.
“This project is a perfect example of what our digital printer can do,” said Wolfgang Pichler, Sales Manager at Pilkington Austria.
"In addition to our numerous processing options for glass, such as toughened safety glass, laminated safety glass, insulating glass, enamelled glass and smart glass, digital printing rounds off our extensive processing options. This was particularly useful for the Inntel Hotel project, where a total of 900 glasses were printed with 800 different designs. This shows the high flexibility compared to the classic silk screen printing process.”
The characteristic arrangement of the glass, a gradual checkerboard pattern of the individual panes, immediately catches the eye. But each individual pane is also a small work of art in itself.
The glazing on the ground floor comprises Pilkington Insulight™ Sun insulating glass units made of Pilkington Suncool™ 60/31 high performance glass in annealed or laminated form combined with laminated glass as inner pane.
The high-rise, sail-like hotel rooms are glazed with Pilkington Insulight™ Protect insulating glass units made of toughened and heat soak tested Pilkington DesignPrint – clear float glass digitally printed in RAL 7032 colour combined with laminated glass with clear or translucent white interlayer.
For the façade spandrel areas shadow boxes have been used glazed with Pilkington Spandrel Glass IGUs. These have been made of either toughened and heat soak tested Pilkington Suncool™ 60/31 THS or toughened and heat soak tested Pilkington DesignPrint glass as an external pane and toughened and heat soak tested Delogcolor® enamelled glass in colour RAL 9005 as an internal pane.
The new Inntel Hotel in Scheveningen impresses with its look and what it has to offer. It’s a great new landmark in the wind with the shape that signals a certain lightness and elegance.
