The community itself was founded by glass pioneer Edward Ford, who named the city Rossford by combining his last name, ‘Ford’, with that of his wife, Caroline ‘Ross’… thus Rossford.

When he came to Toledo in 1898, Edward Ford, who had been connected with family-operated glass businesses in Pennsylvania, bought 173 acres of land just outside the Toledo city limits in Wood County. It was on the last day of August in 1898 when the first spade of soil was turned for the new Edward Ford Plate Glass Company.

The new glass company brought great excitement to the area. Farmers brought their families and people came in long lines of carriages and buggies to see the buildings being constructed. Edward Ford also began to build houses, churches and schools for the many workers the company would employ with the first group of homes being built in April 1899. Thanks to him, the town of Rossford quickly became a reality.
