Door & Fire Protection

The Building Control Department may ask you to install fire-resistant glass in a door, in case fire could endanger your neighbour's property. Fire-resistant glass is often required in buildings such as offices, hotels and B&Bs to create safety zones or escape routes.

The performance of fire-resistant glass is expressed in terms of the amount of time it will take for different qualities to fail. The most common is 'integrity', which indicates how long the glass will prevent flames and hot gases from spreading. Regulations stipulate a minimum time of 30 minutes. The other requirement is 'insulation', which also starts at 30 minutes. This is the ability of the glass to hold back the heat of the fire, keeping the temperature below specified levels.

For over 100 years, the NSG Group has developed a market-leading range of products to suit the most demanding situations, and continues to refine these products to meet evolving needs.

Please note that any fire-rated glass must be installed in a compatible frame to ensure that the entire installation meets the required standard. The design and installation of fire products should be carried out by specialist contractors.
