Canopy Design & Safety

Common forms of canopy are framed single glazing with either Pilkington Optilam™ or Pilkington Optifloat™ THS (toughened heat-soaked glass).

Another fixing method is toughened, frameless, bolted glass, which is supported from above or below with lightweight struts or wires. With bolt fixing, only toughened glass can be used, as laminates are prone to cracking around the stress points created by holes.

As canopies project from buildings, they are subject to wind and snow loads. Therefore, it is important to determine the correct strength of glass to be used. Our technical advisory service can provide calculated glass thicknesses for framed rectangles or corner-bolted toughened glass constructions, provided we have the snow and design wind loads for the location.
