Pilkington Activ Suncool™

Pilkington Activ Suncool™ is a dual-coated, UK-manufactured glass that combines self-cleaning functionality with solar control and low-emissivity thermal insulation. It is intended for use in insulating glass units (IGUs), with the self-cleaning coating positioned on surface #1 and the solar control low-e coating on surface #2.

The Pilkington Activ™ coating, based on a Pilkington UK invention, works in two stages:

How it works

The coating has photo-catalytic and hydrophilic properties:

Stage 1 (photo-catalytic) - The coating reacts with natural daylight to break down and loosen organic dirt.

Stage 2 (hydrophilic) - When it rains, instead of forming droplets, the water is attracted to the coating and spreads evenly over the surface of the glass, helping to wash away any dirt and reduce streaking.

During long dry spells the glass can be cleaned by simply hosing it down with clean water.

Key Features

  • Self-cleaning properties reduce the need for manual cleaning, saving water and expensive, unnatural detergents.
  • Dual-coated glass. On-line pyrolytic self-cleaning coating (surface #1) and off-line solar control low-emissivity coating (surface #2).
  • Highly durable pyrolytic on-line coating lasts the lifetime of the glass.
  • Range of light transmission and solar factor options to support façade design flexibility.

Applications

  • Pilkington Activ Suncool™ is typically specified for commercial projects, but can be used for residential projects too:
  • Commercial offices and education buildings
  • Residential developments and apartment schemes
  • Curtain walling and façade glazing
  • Large, glazed elevations, atria, roof-lights and roof glazing
  • Glazed extensions, conservatories and orangeries
  • Projects requiring combined solar control and reduced façade maintenance

Pilkington Spectrum

Pilkington Spectrum is a Windows-based glass performance model which enables you to quickly and efficiently calculate key properties of a wide range of single glazing and insulating glass units. Also available as an app for mobile devices, you can use Pilkington Spectrum to provide the following information:

  • Light and solar properties (transmittance, reflectance, absorptance, g value, etc.).
  • Centre pane Ug-value.
  • Sound insulation values.
  • Global Warming Potential (GWP), or carbon footprint.
  • Ultra violet (uv) transmittance and colour rendering index (Ra).
  • Other properties (e.g. pendulum body impact resistance, fire resistance, resistance to manual attack, etc.).
