Pilkington Toughened Glass


Pilkington Toughened Glass is a thermally treated safety glass manufactured by heating annealed glass and rapidly cooling it to increase its mechanical strength and alter its breakage characteristics. When fractured, the glass breaks into small fragments, which can reduce the risk of injury compared to standard annealed glass.

It is designed for applications where safety glazing is required in accordance with relevant UK Building Regulations and standards. The product may be used where increased resistance to thermal stress and mechanical impact is needed, subject to appropriate specification and installation.

Heat Strengthened and Heat-soaked Glass


Pilkington Heat Strengthened Glass is not a safety glass and it is approximately twice as strong as annealed glass of similar thickness.

Heat strengthened glass generally fractures in a manner similar to annealed glass and tends to remain in the opening when broken.

It should not be used where safety glazing is specified. It is intended for general glazing where additional strength and/or resistance to mechanical and/or thermal stress are desired.

Pilkington Heat Strengthened Glass can be identified by the descriptor 'HN'.
