Transport Facilities

Buildings used for transport and traffic need to protect potentially large numbers of occupants in the event of a fire while permitting safe evacuation along clearly indicated routes when the need arises. Special fire loads and technical installations have to be encapsulated, while at the same time the concept has to take into account integrated public assembly areas, shopping units, catering outlets and underground car parks. The generously spaced, open design of such buildings is frequently maintained by using extensive areas of fire-resistant glazing for doors, facades, partitions and roofs in combination with modern installations and equipment for detection systems, sprinkler installations and smoke extraction.

Example of application:

Düsseldorf Airport Terminals A+ B, Düsseldorf

At Düsseldorf Airport, Terminal A. which was refurbished in 1998 and the new Terminal B. which was completed in 2000. uses almost the full range of fire-resistant glazing. Inner facades and partitions, numerous large-sized door systems with skylights and connecting structures through to special solutions with irregular shaped oval panes were incorporated in the transparent fire protection concept. The fire resistance classes range from EW 30 to EI 90. In the facades, the fire-resistant glasses consist of insulation glazing with additional sound and thermal insulation properties.
