A new report from the consumer rights organisation Which? calls on the next government to radically re-think the national energy efficiency strategy, with a focus on local delivery and improving the Green Deal.
Entitled A Local Approach to Energy Efficiency, the report highlights that, despite initiatives by successive governments, the UK’s housing stock remains one of the least energy efficient in Europe.
Which? concludes that we should be making better use of resource through a local approach and recommends a package of reforms, including:
- Creating a central fund from existing funding streams, with better cost control and monitoring
- Requiring local authorities to develop and implement new energy efficiency strategies from 2017 under the oversight of a central administrator
- Financial incentives for the able to pay
- Improvements to the Green Deal
