On the 8th July 2011, Shadow Minister for Energy and Climate Change, Luciana Berger MP, visited Pilkington’s Greengate site, in a visit organised in conjunction with Pilkington’s member organisation, the Glass and Glazing Federation.
During the tour Luciana was able to view the range of products manufactured on site and hear about the recent investments Pilkington has made in the UK, including the reopening of UK5 float line (with new on-line coater) to manufacture glass for solar energy applications and the forthcoming off-line coater.
We took the opportunity to discuss the Green Deal with Luciana, including our concerns that uptake of the Green Deal may be low without suitable incentives for householders, such as stamp duty rebate and council tax reductions. We also discussed the difficulties created for manufacturers by the volatility of energy prices in the UK and the need to ensure that manufacturers are not penalised for manufacturing energy saving products that will offset the emissions created during production within months of their use within buildings. Luciana agreed that manufacturers, distributors and installers of energy saving products should be recognised for their essential role in delivering a low carbon economy.
