Why use the Pilkington Planar™ system?

Our impressive track record in the design and supply of structural glass assemblies stems back to the early 1960's and the launch of the very first structural glass system: the Pilkington Suspended Assembly System. The launch of this system transformed the way in which glass could be integrated into the external envelope of a building. Since then we have recorded an impressive set of firsts:

  • The first countersunk hole supported Pilkington Planar™ System
  • The first bolt support insulated Pilkington Planar™ System
  • The first bolt supported laminated Pilkington Planar™ System

Such sustained performance at the forefront of a technologically led sector requires serious commitment to product development and testing. We have our own highly experienced team of design and development engineers who are committed to maintaining the Pilkington Planar™ system as the first choice for structural glazing.

The Pilkington Planar™ structural glass system is the original and leading structural glass system in the world. It combines clean aesthetic lines and elegant detailing with strength and structural integrity in service.

The Pilkington Planar™ structural glazing system provides a flush and uninterrupted glass surface by utilising stainless steel fittings housed in countersunk holes to fix the glass façade back to the structure instead of using the more conventional framed systems. The result is a fully engineered system with the minimum of structure and the maximum visual clarity. A silicone seal between adjacent panels provides weatherproofing.

Pilkington Planar™ provides architects and designers with the freedom  & flexibility to design the buildings of the future. We have vast experience in the provision of glazing for total building cladding, facades, atriums, sky lights and canopies, and through extensive testing - seismic, bomb blast, impact and wind loading - customers are able to specify Pilkington Planar™ systems with confidence.

The Pilkington Planar™ system can be customised to meet almost most customer requirements, providing the opportunity to create a completely unique building
Pilkington Planar™ allows a complete glass envelope to be created- It can be used vertically and horizontally, or on any angle (with a minimum slope of 3°) in plane or section.
Eliminates conventional metal framing, proving a frameless appearance.

Superior Safety & Performance

Safety and reliability are assured as Pilkington Planar™ is fully tested to comply with even the most stringent performance requirements. Pilkington Planar™ has been tested for hurricane resistance, typhoon force wind loads, impact resistance, bomb blast and seismic movement. In all the tests undertaken, the durability and integrity of the system is key, even when the individual glass panels might have been broken.

The use of 316-grade stainless steel fittings in a range of different configurations gives excellent durability in most environments.

Due to our extensive years of testing and experience we offer a standard A 12-Year Comprehensive Warranty on the Complete System (Glass, Fittings, Design, Engineering) in order to provide Absolute Confidence.

Leading Edge Applications

Clients' expectations for innovative buildings with the back-up of proven and reliable technology, continues to dictate the design ethos which applies to the Pilkington Planar™ system.

Our ability to underpin the Pilkington Planar™ system and the new associated developments with in-house design expertise, testing facilities and technical support means that we are well placed to meet the aspirations of this increasingly demanding market.

In addition, the Pilkington Planar™ system is a design concept from which many products can be developed. The mechanically fixed structural glazing systems continue to be at the forefront of the leading edge of building design. The successful and varied applications world-wide illustrate the versatility and durability of the Pilkington Planar™ system.

The advancement of bolted glass technology - from the original Patch Plate suspended assemblies to the present-day high technology glazing solutions - has been largely driven by the continual innovation at our European technology centre in the UK.  This continual development has positioned us as a renowned specialist for leading-edge glass applications.
