Energy Security and Supply

While the Green Deal is considered to be the centrepiece of the Energy Bill, the Bill also contains important provisions on the future of energy security in the UK. The Bill looks to implement procedures to deal with a Gas Supply Emergency and the insolvency of a large gas or electricity supplier, as well as streamlining current procedures and ensuring assessments are made and published for future electricity capacity need.

While energy security is crucial to the infrastructure and economy of the UK, the manufacturing industry relies on an efficient and secure energy supply to function. The relatively high cost of energy in the UK, as well as the costs associated with finding new sources of supply and increasing generation capacity, mean that improving energy efficiency is often an easier and cheaper solution for companies to implement. The industry has made huge strides in ensuring processes and sites are more energy efficient, however Government support from measures such as the Energy Bill is also required.
