Information Systems

The Information Systems (IS) function promotes and delivers high quality and cost-effective Information  systems and services to meet the needs, objectives and strategies of the Group as a whole and individual businesses.

IS departments within the various businesses provide support to a wide range of activities, from large manufacturing locations to small distribution outlets. The support falls into two broad categories of service provision and the development of software applications.

A services team in a business is responsible for mainframe, mid-range and network services and for providing expertise in operating systems, application support software, telecommunications and office products.

An applications development team provides development and support for commercial computer applications in such areas as customer order execution, production planning and control, stock control, accounting and human resources. Because this involves working closely with line management, IS team members need to possess a sound understanding of a wide range of business practices.

The aim is to provide flexible, integrated systems to ensure availability of relevant and up-to-date information which the business can use to improve management control, gain competitive advantage and improve the overall performance of the Group.

On joining a department, graduates will work on live projects including applications development, network development and technical support. Extensive training is provided in the IT skills needed to perform roles technically to a high standard.

The function aims to develop flexible technical and business orientated professionals capable of progressing into non-IT functions. To support this objective, the general business training provided to all graduates is available to those joining IS, including the Diploma in Management.
