Activ keeps IKEA clean

06 October 2008
Pilkington Activ™ self-cleaning glass is now on prominent and permanent display at the brand new IKEA store in the city centre of Coventry.
Manufactured by Pilkington Plyglass, the insulated glass units and are now on display in the £43 million building opened in December 2007, and representing a landmark for the Scandinavian company in that it is the first store ever to be located in a major city centre shopping area.
The project brought a host of new challenges to the design team, and Pilkington Activ was specified to provide both a functional and aesthetic solution for the curtain walling requirements.
The urban location of the structure, which is 32 metres above ground and runs alongside a main road, means that access to cleaning is extremely difficult. However, the self-cleaning properties of the glass eliminate the need for costly cleaning, keeping the building looking pristine.
