Double safety win for Finland

02 September 2008
Pilkington Finland is celebrating two safety firsts.
Laitila has achieved a full year without a significant injury; and the Lahti plant, which has worked 736 days without injury, has earned a national award from Finland's Zero Accident Forum.
The Forum, launched by the government in 2003, is a voluntary network of Finnish workplaces which share best practice in order to improve their safety performance. There are currently 170 members and Pilkington has been involved from the beginning.
Awards are granted each year to organisations which have demonstrated successful safety development. "Safety first is our guiding principle and we do not compromise that," said plant manager Jussi Parkkali.
"Lahti's safety performance has been excellent and it is magnificent to get an acknowledgement from outside the company."
At Laitila, persistent work on safety reporting and STOP training has paid off. "There is now a strong safety culture within the plant," said Finland EHS manager Heikki Huttunen.
""We have achieved a situation where safety is always top of the agenda and where people take personal responsibility for safe performance."
