Pilkington Helps Hull Provide Shopping Showcase

15 February 2008
Visitors to Hull city centre are being treated to a unique shopping experience thanks to glazing from Pilkington. At the heart of the city’s redevelopment, the St Stephen’s shopping and leisure complex features a glazed roof structure, created using the Pilkington Planar™ frameless structural glazing system.
Pilkington Helps Hull Provide Shopping Showcase

The undulating, wave like roof covers a 250 metre long curved walkway, which is as wide as London’s Oxford Street. The glazing extends down vertically to form the east and west entrance facades of the centre, providing a striking and impressive welcome to shoppers. Pilkington glazing is also used for outdoor covered walkways which surround the centre.

The £200 million St Stephen’s redevelopment includes 30,000m2 of retail, 14,000m2 of leisure, a brand new integrated transport interchange and 220 new city centre homes as well as a hotel and residential quarter.

Such a large and complex project required two specialist contractors to undertake the work. Portal installed the glazed roof, while Charles Henshaw & Sons were contracted to fit the shop front and outdoor walkway glazing.

Carl Johnson, Contract Manager, Portal Limited, said: “This was a significant undertaking, with more than 6000m2 of Pilkington Planar™ glass.  To ensure the successful and safe installation of the glass it was necessary to employ various installation techniques.  To afford safe access to the internal face of the glass, mobile towers were erected to travel to the crash deck scaffold.  Portal utilised both mobile and tower cranes with a powered vacuum glass lifter to glaze the roof.  Finally, the wave-form shape of the roof dictated the employment of abseilers to apply the external sealant between the panes of glass.”

Jerry Almond, Sales Manager, Charles Henshaw & Sons, said: “Pilkington Planar™ offers lots of benefits to the client in terms of style and versatility and as installers we know we are working with a high quality, reliable product that comes as a complete package. The glazing looks really impressive, offering continuity throughout the project, from the canopy to the outdoor walkway glazing.”

Stephen Berry, Development Director at, ING Real Estate, developers of St Stephen’s, said: “This is an important redevelopment in the regeneration of Hull city centre. It has delivered more businesses and created 2,500 new jobs. We are delighted that Pilkington glazing has helped to make the shopping and leisure complex such an attractive centrepiece. The glazed roof creates a light and weatherproof environment for the 140,000 shoppers that visit each week.”
