Pilkington Pyrostop® and Pilkington Optiphon™ have been specified in a comprehensive, multi million pound refurbishment of the William Penn Leisure Centre in Rickmansworth, which provides state of the art leisure facilities to the local area.  The internal glazing between the foyer, fitness studio, pools and spectator gallery will use Pilkington Optiphon™ and Pilkington Pyrostop®.

William Penn Leisure Centre, Rickmansworth

Due to its public use, it is essential the leisure centre’s occupants are protected from hot gases, flames and heat should fire occur.  The Pilkington Pyrostop® range of products turns opaque in the event of fire, providing effective insulation from heat for test times of up to 180 minutes in appropriate framing systems, maintaining integrity and providing a barrier to hot gases and flames.  With such a variety of high energy activities, noise levels can be high in a leisure centre environment.  Pilkington Optiphon™ is the ideal glass choice in noisy situations, as its special acoustic interlayer offers excellent noise reduction without compromising on light transmittance or impact performance.

Wayne Morris, from Billericay Glass, said: “As a public building used by hundreds of people a week it was essential we installed fully insulating fire-resistant glazing that offers the highest fire protection insulation and integrity.  Pilkington Pyrostop® does just that and also maximises the available levels of natural light and visibility, while protecting against the spread of fire. The additional benefit of the good acoustic performance provided by Pilkington Pyrostop® is also a bonus in such an environment.  Pilkington Pyrostop® provided a perfect match for the criteria specified as the panels were large enough to give a good viewing area of the pool and rooms.

“The William Penn Leisure Centre also wanted to ensure that activities taking place in the fitness studios and swimming pool did not interfere with other activities in the leisure centre.  By using Pilkington Optiphon™ we could ensure noise reduction and privacy for all the gym’s customers.”

Pilkington Pyrostop® provides an extensively tested range of fire-resistant glass options in a wide range of fire-resistant framing systems, providing a maximum level of protection and a safe and reliable choice for the designer and installer.  The clear alternative to a solid wall, it is designed for consistent and reproducible behaviour in fire and has an established track record of fire test and real fire experience behind it over many years.  Pilkington Pyrostop® provides protection from flames and hot gases to allow an orderly evacuation in the case of a fire and continues to protect valuable assets in the building until the fire is put under control.  The product provides impact resistance up to Class 1(B)1 to BS EN 12600, the highest performance classification. Pilkington Pyrostop® is the product line to use wherever a complete, physically robust fire-resistant glazing is required in combination with the high performance provided by Pilkington products.  Pilkington Optiphon™ provides enhanced noise insulation, a distinctive unique feature that supplements the high level fire performance offered.
