Two new schools in Stoke-on-Trent have benefited from the installation of Pilkington Pyrodur™ Plus glass installed in internal fire doors and screens. Construction of the schools is part of a massive new build and refurbishment programme, the Stoke Schools project, which is a multi million pound venture to improve the educational stock within the area.
The project is a concession joint venture between Balfour Beatty and Innisfree in association with Stoke-on-Trent council and has been progressed as a PFI contract, the largest schools project of its kind so far in the UK.
Nine new schools are to be constructed with two already completed, Norton County Primary School and Burton County Primary School. Pilkington Pyrodur™ Plus has been used internally in both establishments for the timber framed fire doors and fire screens to provide enhanced protection and visual appeal.
Pilkington Pyrodur™ Plus is a new slimline 7.5mm fire resistant laminate glass that easily meets the latest European fire and impact safety standards. It has a clear intumescent interlayer specifically developed for outstanding performance, whilst still offering an aesthetic solution for fire glass applications.
When fire breaks out, this interlayer becomes opaque, providing a safe and effective barrier against the effects of smoke and flame. It also allows the level of heat transmitted from the fire to be at an exceptionally low level for such a thin glass. Under stringent testing, Pilkington Pyrodur™ Plus achieved a fire integrity rating in excess of 40 minutes, a safety margin of at least 30 per cent above the minimum classification time of 30 minutes.
The construction of the new schools and the comprehensive refurbishment of the remaining 122 schools in the Stoke-on-Trent area is being undertaken to the highest environmental, energy and safety standards and the use of Pilkington Pyrodur™ Plus within the school’s fire doors and fire screens is an integral safety element of the overall design scheme.
The Pilkington Pyrodur™ Plus was supplied by TA Anders, one of Pilkington Processing and Merchanting UK’s Pyroplan Partners. Pilkington Processing and Merchanting UK is the specialist business of Pilkington UK, merchanting bulk glass and processed bespoke products for the industry. It is renowned for the assurance it offers in terms of the quality of the end product and throughout all stages of the manufacturing process.
