A private residential property in the Dorset village of Shillingstone, has recently benefited from the installation of replacement windows throughout. Not only has the appearance of Woodview House been greatly enhanced for its owners but the use of new Pilkington Activ™ glass, supplied by Pilkington Processing and Merchanting UK, Poole branch, means that window cleaning will no longer be a weekly chore!
Pilkington Activ™ is the world's first self-cleaning glass and is the result of an intensive research and development programme undertaken by the world's foremost glass manufacturer. GPM Meridian Windows Ltd manufactured and supplied the fully factory finished units for the door, window and French door replacement requirements of Woodview House at their Fareham, Hampshire factories. "Due to its location and design, window cleaning was an arduous task," explains John Palmer, managing director at GPM. "This was a perfect opportunity to use Pilkington Activ™ and the result is exactly as required. The original timber windows were ten years old and the full replacement programme with Pilkington Activ™ in Spectus PVCu frames has significantly improved the appearance of the house."
Pilkington Activ™ is Pilkington Optifloat™ with a special ultra-thin coating on the outside that has a unique dual action. Once exposed to daylight, the coating chemically reacts in two ways - first, it breaks down any organic dirt deposits and second, rainwater falls onto the glass and washes away the loosened dirt. The glass is hydrophilic which means that the rain water runs evenly over the surface rather than forming droplets. The coating is activated by UV radiation, but contains harmless chemical substances so offering environmental benefits.
This is the first installation of its kind to be undertaken by GPM Meridian Ltd and the company has already taken orders for more installations using the Pilkington Activ™ glass. The versatility of the glass allows it to be installed in any frame for a truly revolutionary concept in modern glazing.
