Performing ArtsWhen the world-renowned Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) building in London underwent a radical transformation recently, Pilkington Processing and Merchanting UK was involved in the specification of the glass element.   The plan, funded by financial support from the Arts Council of Great Britain, and designed by Avery Architects, included the demolition of all but the Gower Street frontage and the introduction of a new public foyer accessed from Malet Street. It also included the provision of three new performance spaces, (the largest being the new Jerwood Vanbrugh Theatre), workshops, sound studios, rehearsal rooms and administration offices.

21mm Pilkington Pyrostop™ glass was supplied by Pilkington Processing and Merchanting UK, for installation within Fendor Hansen Fineline frames providing internal screens for the main staircase within the central lightwell.

Pilkington Pyrostop™ is a member of the Pilkington fire resistance range. It forms an opaque barrier against smoke, flame and heat during a fire, minimising panic and fear during an evacuation. It is also very effective in providing protected access for fire fighters to quickly access the source of the blaze. For this project it provided the one hour fire integrity and insulation required as well as offering an aesthetic yet functional alternative to solid wall construction.  Pilkington Processing and Merchanting is renowned for the assurance it offers in terms of the quality of the end product throughout all stages of the manufacturing process. With 21 branches nationwide, the company merchants bulk glass and processed bespoke products.
