Edinburgh One Morrison Street is located in the heart of the city’s financial district and is one of the last development sites to complete the masterplan of the area, known as the Exchange. The project has used glass supplied by the Cumbernauld branch of Pilkington Processing and Merchanting UK, a 21 strong branch structure, merchanting bulk glass and processed bespoke products.
Following a building design and layout supplied by architects, Hurd Rolland, the structure maximises the available space, creating a 10m deep office space, centred around a light and spacious atrium and service core. The project is part of the overall Edinburgh One scheme, which incorporates two sweeping crescents, fronting the Western Approach Road and Morrison Street.
The site is used to create six storeys of a steel framed superstructure with concrete upper floors. The building relates in height to the neighbouring buildings and the streetscape on Morrison Street. The entrance tower provides a distinctive feature, with the fourth and fifth floors set back, creating fourth floor terraces with unbroken glazing and panoramic views across the city.
Pilkington Pyrostop™ glazing was used internally in the glazed atrium, at the corners of the Skypark integrated automated car parking bay and also to the windows of the east face. Pilkington Pyrostop™ offers up to 120 minutes of fire integrity - the ability of a glazing system to keep back flame, smoke and hot gases with no flaming on the non-fire side. It also gives up to 120 minutes of fire and insulation, restricting the temperature rise on the non-fire side.
A clear, multi laminate glass, Pilkington Pyrostop™ forms an opaque barrier against smoke, flame and heat during a fire, minimising panic and fear during an evacuation. In addition, it offers enhanced impact resistance up to Class A BS6206, with excellent sound reduction properties. The combination of strength and durability provides the necessary protection for the Edinburgh One Morrison Street building, whilst adding visual appeal to the overall construction, which is now completed.
