Pilkington Processing and Merchanting UK is enabling hundreds of homes in the Parr area of St. Helens to undergo an energy saving facelift with the installation of its Pilkington Insulight™ Therm units (the new name for Pilkington Insulight™ units incorporating Pilkington K Glass™).

Recent research has shown that use of Pilkington K Glass™ in window replacement programmes can provide a significant boost towards achieving energy conservation, affordable warmth and COA2 reduction targets. Additionally, using Pilkington K Glass™ provides benefits through condensation reduction and improved occupier health and comfort.

Thanks to funding from the Government's Single Regeneration Budget funding, and the European Coalfield Community - available to former coal mining areas.

Pilkington Insulight™ Therm Units were installed throughout hundreds of homes in St. Helens.

Government research predicts an average saving in energy costs of AL80 per home through this Pilkington Insulight™ Therm window replacement programme an average of 21% reduction in heating costs. Further benefits of Pilkington Insulight™ Therm include a predicted reduction in COA2 emissions an average of 11.5% - making a considerable contribution towards St. Helens' Home Energy Conservation Act (HECA) targets.

The utilisation of Pilkington Insulight™ Therm in such local authority housing programmes can help to meet the much stricter Insulation standards for glazing proposed in the Building Regulation Part L revisions which are expected to require low emissivity glass, such as Pilkington K Glass™, as standard from next spring.

In addition, to meet strict 'Secure by Design' standards, the downstairs windows and doors of the houses have an outer leaf of Pilkington Laminated Safety glass. The privacy of tenants is improved by the Company's new patterned glass Pilkington Contora™ - which was installed in bathrooms and entrance doors.

Matt Buckley, Head of Sales and Marketing for Pilkington Processing and Merchanting UK, commented: "With 150 years of expertise in glass manufacture, and a long term commitment to the development of energy saving glass, Pilkington has gone far to achieve energy conservation and reduce heating costs.
