1. What is Pilkington K Glass™ S?

Pilkington K Glass™ S is a single-stock toughenable neutral-coloured, low-emissivity product that provides high thermal insulation and solar gain when used as a component in Insulating Glass Units. It is ideal for achieving band A Window Energy Rating (WER) when used in windows of any frame material or system.

2. What is the difference between Pilkington K Glass™ S and the original Pilkington K Glass™ ?

Pilkington K Glass™ S is an off-line coated (soft coat) product and should not be confused with the original online coated (hard coat) Pilkington K Glass™ product.
Both the performance and the handling characteristics of the two products are different so it is important that the necessary processing requirements are well understood.

3. Is it available in laminated form?

Yes 6.4 mm Pilkington Optilam K Glass™ S is available.

4. How does it differ in performance to the other products in our low-emissivity glass range?

Pilkington K Glass 1.51 0.78
Pilkington Optitherm™ S4 Plus 1.20 0.75
Pilkington K Glass™ S 1.20 0.75

5. Does it replace Pilkington Optitherm™ S4 Plus in our range?

Yes.

6. What is its shelf life?

Unopened Pilkington K Glass™ S has a storage shelf-life of six months from the date of delivery providing appropriate storage conditions are met; i.e. packs should be stored where the relative humidity does not exceed 70% and the ambient temperature does not fall below 15oC.

7. Does the product need edge deletion?

Yes. Prior to manufacturing Pilkington K Glass™ S sheets into Insulating Glass Units, the coating must be edge deleted to ensure good adhesion of the unit seal. The edge deletion process is ideally undertaken on-line (when cutting). The width of the edge deletion depends on the depth of the Insulating Glass Unit seal.

8. Will the surface coating be any more robust than other 'popular' soft coats?

Internal testing has shown that Pilkington K Glass™ S has a more robust coating.  Pilkington K Glass™ S is far more resistant to scratches, scuffs and general handling marks.  It is less susceptible to breakages and travels much better when being transported.  It is still a soft coat and compared to hard coat Pilkington K Glass™ it still needs handling with more care.

9. Will it toughen any faster than other 'popular' soft coats?

Internal testing has shown  that Pilkington K Glass™ S is quicker and easier to toughen than competitor offline low-e products.  Pilkington K Glass™ S is visually superior and looks the same before and after toughening.

10. Are there full Handling & Processing Guidelines available?

Yes this is available as a download from our website at www.pilkington.co.uk/kglass or a hard copy may be requested free of charge from our Customer Contact Centre on 01744 69 2000.

11. How is Pilkington K Glass™ S made?

It is made by Magnetron sputtering on an off-line coater.

12. Does Pilkington K Glass™ S have similar U-value performance to other 'popular' soft coats?

Yes.  It has a centre pane U value of 1.20.

13. Will we have to advise BFRC, FENSA, etc if we decide to move from Planitherm Total / Climaguard to Pilkington K Glass™ S?

No.  All the competent persons schemes have issued announcements confirming that products such as Pilkington K Glass™ S which have equivalent or better performance may be substituted for existing coatings such as Planitherm Total Plus

14. When will it be available?

Pilkington K Glass™ S will start to become available from 1st November 2011. It will be tested through some selected routes to market and availability will then be widened gradually.
