Skylight Glass in Design
One of the latest home design trends is to use glass to allow as much natural light into a home as possible. Natural light creates the illusion of size, reduces eyestrain and has even been known to enhance people's moods.
An excellent way to facilitate this is by installing skylights in your home. Skylights are essentially windows which are fitted at an angle rather than vertically, usually through the ceiling or roof and fill your home with natural light.
Cleaning skylights is no easy task as they tend to be awkwardly situated and have not been designed to support the weight of a person. However, keeping skylights looking good is made much easier by fitting Pilkington Activ™ Self-Cleaning Glass into the frames.
Self-cleaning glass is essentially a coated glass with photocatalytic and hydrophilic properties. The ultraviolet light in daylight reacts with the photocatalytic coating to break down organic dirt, like dust, bird droppings and tree sap, while also reducing the adherence to the glass of inorganic matter like cement or plaster. The second part of the process uses the coating's hydrophilic properties to help the rain flow evenly across the glass and wash the dirt away. This "sheeting" process allows the glass to dry quickly reducing unsightly streaks.
