Pilkington Assists An Arresting Development At The Police Federation

08 May 2009
The Police Federation of England and Wales has been given a new headquarters at Leatherhead, Surrey, thanks to Pilkington and its structural glazing system Pilkington Planar™. Specified for its strength and quality, Pilkington Planar™ was incorporated into two striking features in the new building.
The Police Federation of England and Wales Headquarters at Leatherhead, Surrey featuring Pilkngton Planar™

The entrance of the headquarters features a large glass façade stretching across the front of the building, leading visitors in to a bright, spectacular lobby. In addition, a huge glass atrium roof has been created. Pilkington Planar™ was put to the test with this architecturally challenging design, passing with flying colours to create an extraordinary feature with minimum visible structure, a flush glass finish and exceptional clarity.

Owen Pask, Associate, architects, Archial Architects (Warwick), said: “The concept of this project was to create a fully-integrated glass feature that would encompass the existing building, creating a striking exterior whilst at the same time making the interior bright and pleasant for its users.

“The technical details involved in attaching a new structure to an existing one really put our knowledge and concept to the test, and Pilkington Planar™, being versatile, safe, strong, and of unrivalled quality, was the perfect solution for our vision. For a building of high importance such as the Police Federation headquarters, it came up trumps.”

Ray Spilman, Technical Manager, glazing contractors, Ide Contracting, said: “The glass façade needed to be hung from the steelwork at roof level in order to attach it to the existing structure. This in turn had to incorporate the entrance lobby, as the glass structure effectively envelopes the existing entrance, and once this was complete the glass then needed to be attached to the building to fit in seamlessly with the existing structure. By providing simple, effective, seamless jointing, Pilkington Planar™ was relatively easy to install without having to compromise the architect’s vision for the project.”

Pilkington Planar™ is a leading structural glazing system which is utilised by architects looking to maximise the aesthetic impact that glazing can have on a development. It lets architects create a complete glass envelope for building with facades on any plane, so you can build highly aesthetically pleasing environments with more light and a greater feeling of space.

The headquarters provide the base for the operations of the Police Federation, which represents the interests of 140,000 Constables, Sergeants, Inspectors and Chief Inspectors working across England and Wales.
