Pilkington Planar™ Can Now Clean Itself

02 August 2006
The use of glass cladding is to be revolutionised with the introduction of Pilkington Planar Activ™, a product that combines the superb aesthetics and design capabilities of the glazing system that changed the face of glass design in buildings, with the company's revolutionary dual action self-cleaning glass. Uncompromised designs are now possible where previously use of large glass areas may have been restricted by maintenance and cleaning access issues.

Pilkington Planar Activ™ is the product architects have been eagerly awaiting since the introduction four years ago of Pilkington Activ™, the world's first self-cleaning glass which incorporates a permanent coating that works with natural elements to continuously clean the surface of the glass. Following the launch of the product, interest from professional designers increased as they realised its potential for large, glass-clad structures, which have traditionally created significant problems for cleaning, balanced against the highly desirable aesthetics of glass. Three further years of development has now perfected the product for use in such environments.

The primary development that has now enabled Pilkington Planar Activ™ to reach the market is in sealant technology, with the availability of a range of silicone-free seals that are crucial to weatherproof the system whilst maintaining the self-cleaning properties of the glass.
Pilkington Planar Activ™ is available in a large variety of performance and aesthetic options by combining glasses from the company's extensive range. These include solar and acoustic control, as well as improved thermal insulation and security versions, and in a range of colours.

A self-cleaning version of Pilkington Planar™ Integral, which holds the patented Planar fixings within the laminate, may be regarded as the perfect combination, offering sealed glazing and now a flush uninterrupted self-cleaning surface, in addition to the performance offered by other glasses used in the laminate.

Pilkington Architectural is the division with the responsibility for the design, manufacture and supply of Pilkington Planar™ systems and offers a unique range of design and engineering services to professional designers and specifiers. The team has been responsible for advising on and supplying Pilkington Planar™, the global market leader in glass cladding systems, for some of the most celebrated buildings in the world.
