Pilkington Welcomes FENSA Expansion Of The Default Method Of Compliance

21 February 2011

Pilkington Building Products is pleased to support the recent announcement by FENSA that it has given approval to an extension of the default method of compliance to Building Regulations Part L 2010 with an equivalent to band C of Window Energy Ratings (WER) using hard coated glass.

Pilkington energiKare™ incorporating Pilkington K Glass™

The announcement clarifies previous uncertainties over the default route to compliance and confirms exactly what IGU components are required for windows to comply with Part L of the Building Regulations.

In order to comply, the IGU must comprise;
• Hard coat low emissivity glass inner pane
• 90% argon gas cavity fill
• Low iron glass outer pane, and
• Minimum 16 mm warm edge technology spacer bar.

This specification for default compliance ensures that the window incorporating such an IGU is the equivalent of a minimum of Band C of the WER system. This is for PVCu windows, on frame profiles with at least three internal chambers within the main body of the profile.  It is currently not applicable to timber, steel or aluminium frames.

Tony Smith, Market Development Manager, Pilkington Building Products UK, said “This announcement brings clarification to an area of previous confusion and marks another approved default route of compliance, equivalent to at least band C WER, but without the official certification of a registered rating.  Those wishing to gain an official WER together with its distinctive labelling and associated householder marketing benefits for their products must still go through the appropriate procedures with the BFRC. Using this route, the defined IGU make up would normally enable a window to achieve a band B or A”.

We recommend using the combination of Pilkington K Glass™ or Pilkington K Glass™ OW with Pilkington Optiwhite™ in IGUs in order to meet Part L through the new route. This combination of products also enables IGUs and windows incorporating them to qualify for the Pilkington energiKare™ scheme and benefit from promoting our brand to householders.
